Instrument Assisted Soft-Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

What is IASTM?

Instrument Assisted Soft-Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a manual therapy technique that aids in recovery following soft-tissue injuries. Practitioners perform IASTM using stainless steel tools (as demonstrated in the picture above) to treat the area in an effort to promote movement (mobilization) and healing (remodeling) of the injured tissue.

(This technique is believed to have evolved from Gua Sha, a Chinese Medicine technique that was first documented in medical records 700 years ago during the Ming Dynasty. Although the techniques are similar, it’s worth noting that Gua Sha and IASTM are used for very different purposes.)

How does IASTM work?

Put simply, when soft-tissue is injured the body begins producing scar tissue to help protect the area from further damage. This newly formed scar tissue is less mobile and results in an area feeling stiff, tight, or even painful that limits an individual’s ability to move properly. We frequently refer to these as “adhesions” or “fascial restrictions”.

When IASTM is applied it begins a cascade of events that help to remodel the injured tissue. The treatment creates an increase in local inflammation, which draws blood to the area. The blood carries specialized cells to the area that help to remove excess scar tissue and increase collagen production to lay down healthy tissue.
